Along the roads in Europe - especially in France - one sees small cement markers at regular intervals.  The French call these markers bournes kilometriques.  We know them as kilometer-stones or milestones.  Milestones show the number of the route as well as the distance to the next town.  Their red or yellow color also shows whether the route is a national highway or a local road.  These markers give this game its name:  MILLE BORNES (pronounced 窶廴EEL BORN窶) means 窶彗 thousand milestones.窶

The non-computerized version of Mille Bornes is available from Parker Brothers.  Mille Bornes was first written (as far as I know) for the Macintosh by Robert Harris, and released under the name 1000 Miles.  Thanks to both Parker Brothers and Robert Harris  窶”  parts of this program are based on each of their games.
